I remember a long time ago (but can't be bothered to find the post right now) when I posted a big ranting vent about my high school sweetheart and her refusal to let me have anything to do with the child we had together.

Yesterday that child, my biological daughter, who is now 12 and who I've never been able to talk to or be with, sent me a message on Facebook.

That's fucking amazing, Josh. It sounds like it could work out to be a really good situation, and I hope that's what it turns out to be.

She's turning into an adult, slowly but surely. And they can't keep her away from you forever, if she's determined. Even if they are determined too, there's always age eighteen.

Much hope and love! <3<3

WHOA I AM FLOORED!

you're going to talk to her, right? i'm sure you will, why would i even ask that? just saying -- having been that child -- i still AM that child -- it had to take a lot of guts for her to do that. who knows what she's been told. she needs to know that you wanted to be in her life.

holy crap. that's awesome!!

Yes, I'm already talking to her, and making it clear that I wanted to be part of her life and still do. I'm also trying to work with her parents to make sure everything is kosher, though I haven't gotten much feedback.

well, if all else fails, she can do whatever she wants in 6 years. as long as you can keep tabs on one another until then (where you're living) then you're set. but definitely if they will get on board it will make things much better.

Sounds like great news...when you say her parents, was she adopted out?

Hope you guys can make it all work...

Ironically, an old friend of mine (we're still on okay terms) ended up marrying my ex, and because I knew the guy and stuff, it was easy for me to sign papers allowing him to adopt her. He's been my point of contact obviously, since the ex still hates my guts.

Wow! Coming from an estranged-from-father situation myself, I really hope things work out between you two. It could be a very touchy situation, but the fact that she contacted you is a good sign. Best of luck to you!

I'd be willing to bet that things'll work out. Sounds like you're being respectful of all the feelings in play, too, and that's really admirable, not that I have anything to compare this to in my experience.

Kind of puts a new spin on the therm "social networking site" though, doesn't it?

I should have considered being contacted by her through that medium as a possibility, but it never crossed my mind. It's actually a really good way to start.

Um, it seems to have kinda just fizzled out for now. I messaged her again in October on her birthday to say happy birthday, and she responded thanks, but that's kinda it. I don't know what's behind that - whether she got as much as she was comfortable with, or whether there was some influence from the parents for her to back off. I'm not pushing it right now. She'll talk to me more, when she's ready, I'm confident.
