I really hate when people are talking about a website and they spell it 'sight' instead of 'site'.

I assume at this point you're all familiar with the RIAA's threat to sue people who share files. Certainly it's an attempt to scare everyone into stopping by setting some examples, but it's evidently coming into fruition already.

A DJ I talk to on one of my trance music message boards shared what happened to him last night. He received an e-mail from someone claiming to be from the RIAA which said that he owed them money for sharing files. Apparently the RIAA rep made him prove that he was a DJ and that all the MP3s he had were indeed ripped from vinyl or cds that he owned and had legitimately purchased (they were and he had receipts, I guess they let him slide).

(He seems certain it was legitimately the RIAA.)

Then another person in the message board said "My friends have been telling me this all day."

So: Two things occur to me here. 1) It looks like this is really going to happen. and 2) They didn't just come out and sue the guy - they first tried to scare him with the e-mail. So, do you suppose that the headlines about suing people are just a threat, and the e-mails sent out to file sharers are to scare people into shutting down? Do you think that's going to be the main thrust of this latest advance from the RIAA? Or do you think there really will be some heavy lawsuits coming down?

This will be interesting to watch.

Oh, and in case you're wondering where I line up on the issue, FUCK the RIAA.

And if you want to read the message board for yourself, the relevant part starts here.

I've disabled file sharing until we see how this shakes down.
