There has been speculation that the Bush camp has been manipulating the color-coded terror level for political gain. Today The Guardian reports that the information upon which this weekend's terror level boost was based was actually "years old."

The BBC is running the same story, as are the New York Times and the Washington Post. (I still refuse to sign up to read a newspaper, especially for the purposes of linking to stories in it that other people would then have to sign up for. Fascists.)

Didn't Aesop write a story about that?

And GWB and his pals think this is going to boost our confidence in him. *skeptication* Howard Dean makes a strong point when he says the following:
"It's hard to know what to make [of it]. None of us outside the administration have access to the intelligence which led to this determination.

"I am concerned that every time something happens that's not good for President Bush, he plays this trump card, which is terrorism," he told CNN. "His whole campaign is based on the notion that 'I can keep you safe, therefore, at times of difficulty for America, stick with me' and then out comes Tom Ridge. It's just impossible to know how much of this is real and how much of this is politics, and I suspect there's some of both in it." (source)
I can't wait to see Kerry make Dubya look like a stuttering gimp in the debates. Not that Kerry is necessarily the best man to be president, and not that anyone couldn't make Dubya look like a stuttering gimp (most media outlets have accomplished this already), but it will be nice to see Dubya's real-time response.

FYI, Kerry and Edwards have released (I hesitate to say they've actually written it, though I'm sure they signed off on it) a 263 page book entitled Our Plan For America. The overview is here, and the entire book is available as a free download here (1.5M .pdf). I'm sure most of it is feel-good rhetoric and probably will turn out to be fluff, but it would be nice if maybe some of their ideas materialized.

I've known a lot of people in my life who are survivors of sexual violence of some sort or another. I remember when I got into high school and had a lot of girl/friends who confided these things to me. I was fortunate enough to be raised in a situation very far removed from this sort of thing, so I was shocked at how many of them had had experiences of this kind.

This is a bigger problem than most people are willing to admit. Along those lines, misia made a post which seems to really be resonating with other victims of sexual violence. I've seen no less than five posts referencing it on my friendsfriends page.

Those of you who have experiences like this, I hope this is of some help to you.

If you're one of those people who enjoys humor of a strange and random variety, you really really need to check out my boy nick_charles. His latest entry had me laughing so hard I almost choked on my Snickers. He's drawing parallels between the Roland 808 (music DJ equipment) and the Boeing 707 (large jetliner). I won't spoil it by quoting out of context, just trust me, this is a funny read.

Plus, this guy is relatively new to LJ and hasn't had a lot of exposure, and is a little shy and hasn't gone out and acquired the readership he deserves. Read, laugh, comment.
